What are Self-Confidence and Self-Esteem? Are they different?

Self-confidence and self-esteem may overlap, but they have distinct differences.

Self-Confidence is how much you believe in yourself and your abilities. Self-confidence develops over time, often through successes and achievements. It will change often depending on different situations.

For example, you are unlikely to feel self-confident as a new mother when you have just had a baby. Youโ€™ve had no time to develop the new skills needed. As a mom of a 5-year-old, you may feel a lot more confident in your parenting as you have been through the challenges and triumphs to get you there.

Self-Esteem is different to self-confidence because it is how you value and respect yourself. Think of it as your inner voice. You can be confident in your abilities but still have low self-esteem on the inside. Self-esteem changes through your life experiences and relationships with others.

Letโ€™s go back to the new mom again. If she believes on the inside, she is not good enough as a mother, she may appear confident and together but have doubts about her ability and not trust her judgement.

Positive affirmations, along with other exercises to increase the good feelings you have about yourself, are a great way to increase your confidence and self-esteem.

Why are affirmations so great?

I like to call these powerful words your self-care powerhouse.

Affirmations are positive statements that you can use to challenge negative thoughts or strengthen positive thoughts.

Can saying a few positive words work?

Yes!

Affirmations are a powerful tool for changing your mindset and breaking negative thought loops, but thereโ€™s a catch.

You need to be consistent, patient, believe in your goal, and follow up with action.

Just thinking, โ€œI want to be healthy and fitโ€ whilst eating a box of brownies will not work. Sadly.

Thereโ€™s no magic involved, but there are scientific studies on the effect of affirmations on our mindset and wellbeing.

How to use positive affirmations for self-confidence.

There are a few key points to remember when creating and using affirmations for self-confidence.

  • Keep them personal. Start your affirmation with I or My.
  • Keep them in the present tense. Say I am brave. Not I will be brave.
  • Keep them specific and relevant.
  • Keep them short and catchy (although a well written longer affirmation is great too).
  • Keep them positive! Leave out any negative or doubtful words like canโ€™t, possibly, donโ€™t.

Write, print or draw your affirmations and keep them all over your house, work space, car, mobile screensaver. I like to immerse myself in positive words. It keeps them at the front of your mind, which is no simple task for busy mothers.

Say, read, look at your affirmations as many times a day as you can. Consistent practice and belief in your goal is the key to your success.

Saying your favorite affirmations first thing in the morning or after a meditation when your mind is clearer is a good idea as well. If you are keen, look at yourself in the bathroom mirror whilst you say them! Get the message in.

A great tip for turning words into change is to visualize how you will feel when you have achieved this change. Try to feel the emotion as strongly as you can whilst you are repeating the affirmation.

Letโ€™s get going with the list of affirmations! Make daily affirmations part of your self-love routine.
