68 Better Get To Know You Questions For Kids

Happy Family Talking

A child seldom needs a good talking to as much as a good listening to.– Robert Brault

Switch roles with your child for a day and become the one asking the questions, not answering them.

See where it takes you.

Listening to your child is key if you want to understand them and ultimately be deeply connected to them.

Children often struggle to communicate their emotions and experiences, making it challenging for them to be heard.

As the mother of a neurodivergent child, I know the immense benefit of truly listening to my children. Our relationship blossomed when I finally understood the power of listening.

Open-ended questions are a great way to get your children talking and hopefully avoid one-word answers.

Questions that start with a what, how, when leave more room for a conversation to open up.

If you are ready to get to know your kids better with some insightful and fun questions, here they are.

Why getting to know your kids matters?

Having a strong connection with your children is the basis of your relationship.

When you know what makes your child tick and you pay attention to what they are saying, they are more likely to open up to you and trust you.

As I soon will have a teenager in the house, this has never been more important to me. I remember my teenage years all too well. My parents had a lot of patience.

With the right questions, you might gain insights from your child that could help your relationship grow.

When should I ask these get to know you questions for kids?

If you like a slow morning, then first thing in the morning over breakfast might be great. Or maybe you prefer chatting at the dinner table. You could use these as conversation starters when you are having a walk or doing some crafts together.

There’s no right or best way to ask your children these questions. I doubt many teenagers would like you to ask them icebreaker questions whilst playing video games, but I might be wrong!

What if my child doesn’t enjoy talking?

But have you heard of special time? It’s a parenting concept that caught my eye many years ago and we quickly made it a regular part of our week.

Just take some time, 5-15 minutes several times a week, where you pay special attention to one child. Don’t ask questions, let them lead and don’t direct the play or activity.

I have found often during special time, my neurodivergent child would start a conversation and give me insights I hadn’t heard before.

Even if special time remains mostly silent, giving that focused attention without directing them is the best gift you could give to your child.

What to ask a ten year old?

I would pick a few questions from the main list and one from the younger kids and older children list too. 10-year-olds are in that delicate in between tween stage, not actually a teenager, not a young child but balancing somewhere in between.

Do you have any brilliant get you know you questions for kids that should be on this list?

Let me know in the comments below and they could make the next update.

Happy talking.
